Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Drivers Failing to See Riders

One of the biggest dangers to motorcyclists is the simple fact that motor vehicle operators often fail to even notice them. Motorcycles are smaller and can easily disappear in a vehicle’s blind spot, leading to last-minute collisions.

What can you do? Stay proactive! Avoid riding too closely to vehicles, steer clear of blind spots, and make yourself as visible as possible. Always keep your headlights on, day or night, and wear bright or reflective clothing to stand out against other colors on  the road. Your safety often depends on your visibility.

2. Head-On Collisions

Head-on collisions are both terrifying and deadly, often occurring when a vehicle switches lanes to overtake slower traffic without noticing an oncoming motorcyclist.

To reduce the risk, stay aware of your surroundings. Watch for tight convoys of vehicles where someone may try to suddenly overtake or pass another and always keep your headlights on. Sometimes, being noticed even seconds earlier can be the difference between life and tragedy.

3. Left-Turn Accidents

Left-turn accidents are another common hazard, especially when a vehicle turns across oncoming traffic. Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable when going straight through an intersection or passing a car that turns unexpectedly.

When you approach an intersection, stay alert—even if you have the right of way. Slow down, scan the area, and always assume the unexpected could happen. Being ready to react quickly could save your life.

4. Lane Splitting

Lane splitting (riding between two lanes of stopped or slow-moving traffic) can save time—but is it worth the risk? This maneuver reduces reaction time in tight spaces and leaves motorcyclists vulnerable to sudden movements, like a car changing lanes.

If lane splitting is legal in your area, proceed with caution. Always assess the risk before attempting it, and understand that safety comes before speed. If it’s prohibited where you’re riding, resist the temptation and follow the law for everyone’s safety.

5. Speeding

Speeding is one of the leading contributors to motorcycle accidents, and the fault often lies with the rider. Riding at extreme speeds reduces your control over the bike and makes it harder to stop or swerve around obstacles, such as debris, wildlife, or other vehicles.

Remember, it’s far better to arrive safely even a little later than not at all. Stick to safe speed limits, especially on unfamiliar or challenging roads, and prioritize control over haste.
